world wide wakeful 03Last month we jumped into the world of Live Streaming with Klapture, an initiative that gathers together different music projects around Berlin through live streaming. Direct connection, good music, great vibe, no lines.

This way World Wide Wakeful or WWW was born, a project that aims to offer music lovers around the world the possibility to join our monthly musical ritual, live streaming of electronic sessions up to 6 hours “Made in Berlin”. Each session spotted on a different unique private location around Berlin always counting with the participation of different DJs.

On March the 10th our first live stream session took place, hosted and organize by our Wakeful guys, Bruno Otranto & FreedomB. A b2b session where we could enjoy a well structured live set that started at 4pm and lasted until ten o’clock. Deep house, tech house and some tech bits to finish up were the sounds that we could enjoy during the six hours live-streamed house party evening.

April 28th was the date chosen to give life to the second live streaming session of the season. Different location and different DJs but the same good vibe from our first WWW. In charge of the opening was Samu, one of the invited artists to our “Eastern Festival” at Golden Gate. Samu performed a perfect set, proving why he has been chosen as a bimonthly resident at our Golden Gate Sunday nights. A selected stream of House and Tech-House that brought listeners and dancers into the perfect mood for what it was to follow.

The clock struck six o’clock when guys from Wakeful took control over the DJ table. A four hours long b2b session where we could enjoy a musical selection of deep house with a touch of funky mixed with melodic textures, followed by tech-house softly mixed with classic old school transporting us to the good old times. A perfectly matched stream of sounds by FreedomB & Bruno Otranto that made us vibrate six hours long.

And remember that for those who could not enjoy on real time our live broadcast Dj session, Klapture offers you the chance to revive what happened through Wakeful’s channel on Youtube.

Keeping you updated ;)

Bruno OtrantoOur beloved resident Bruno Otranto has recently been interviewed by the girls of Shop a Man. It seems that Wakeful is making noise in the city and they thought of him as a good candidate for a review about the Berlin Clubszene ;)

A brief resume about Bruno and his last feelings, thoughts and projects here in the city of Wakeful. You can find both the German and English version. Enjoy it!!

And now the English version for all non-German speakers :)

Bruno, you are originally from Madrid and one of perceived 2 million Spaniards Berlin is warmly welcoming at the moment. Why did you choose to come to Berlin?

It was kind of a weird story. Three years ago, in 2010, I was living in Brighton in England. I decided to organize a music trip with some friends. By this time, I was also playing as a DJ and organizing my own night called “Burleske”, which was a mixture of circus and electronic music culture. 90% of the music that I played there came from German producers, and that’s why I decided to find a nice German festival. After having checked loads of places, we just accidentally found “Fusion Festival”. I found it quite interesting that they don’t reveal the line-up until the starting day. The funny point was when my friends told me two days before going there, that they can’t come… So then I just decided to go by my own! After 4 days of partying and having found many new unknown artists, I stayed two days in Berlin and completely fell in love.

What do you think is so fascinating about the famous club scene in Berlin? Or is it maybe only a fad?

It is amazing to see unbelievable line-ups every weekend, where you can find 5 or 8 the top artist playing at the same party. But to be honest, I prefer the “home made” artists. They are on the second line, but create a unique style that is afterwards exported from Berlin to everywhere in the world. For me, they are the gems of the Berlin music scene and I love to see how the local venues and labels support all of them.

You’ve been on the move as a DJ in Europe’s clubs since a couple of years now. What would you say distinguishes Berlin’s club scene from other ones?

It is completely different to what I have seen until now. Here you can see how the people feel love and respect for the electronic music and the DJ figure. This aspect is easily found in the support the artists get from the promoters, venue owners or audiences. Just here I have experimented how people come to you personally after your set to thanks you for the music you have played.

Berlin is known for drugs, excessive partying and escapism: Do you think that today’s young people are too unconcerned with the “real life”?

Well… this is a tricky question. I run a night per month called “Wakeful” at Golden Gate and it is always on a Sunday. Golden Gate has no closing time, they just close when the power on the dancefloor is gone. The last time at 10 a.m. (Monday morning), I tried to convince the owner to stop the music and close, because I was knackered and had to work at 1 p.m. – but the dancefloor was still full! And the people also full (of energies and extras). So the answer is: Yes, in my opinion, here you can find young people that like to escape from reality, using clubbing as the best excuse. Nevertheless, you can’t generalize – I also have many friends that don’t come to my parties because they must to work on Monday morning.

What was the most exciting gig you had in Berlin’s club scene? And why? Maybe any weird happenings like naked boobies or love confessions?

Definitely Wakeful, the third edition with Norman Weber (Luna city Express) as our guest DJ. My partner FreedomB and I were in a risky situation: If the party is successful, we continue in 2013, if not, it’s the end of Wakeful. Thank god, Norman took control of the DJ booth like the “tunnel light” that shows you the salvation way. In resume: Club packed, people falling in love and naked boobies everywhere.

How do you get your ideas for your mixes? Any artists who inspire you?

I love to listen to sets and podcast from “top artists” like Andhim, Ardalan, Superflu, Monkey Safari or Alle Farben. Basically, I like to find out the tracks that I consider good in their sets and buy them. Afterwards, I like to prepare my own set at home, trying a lot of different combinations until I find the best for me. Shazam is a really good tool in order to find out the name of the tracks, but it also could be a kind of sickly thing… I remember one time that I heard a tune coming out of one of the speakers at Media Markt. I used my phone to recognize the song… And everyone looked at me surprised… I still don’t know why!

You’ve got your own label ‘Pantomime Records’. Is it important to have an own label to join different kinds of producers to make a difference in the club and music scene?

Yes, it’s vital. Today, if your artistic name appears on a flyer without a record label reference, it looks unprofessional. Thanks to Pantomime records, I made lots of producer contacts, that afterwards formed part of my own events. I think that a label is a good showcase for the artist providing seriousness and professionalism to the music artist.

Does a charming, young chap like you get a lot of offers from the ladies when you’re on stage?

Yes! They offer me sex, drugs and Gemüsekbabs. To be honest, I don’t like drugs (specially during work time) and it is also difficult to have sex and mix at the same time. The only thing that I can’t avoid and that distracts me during a set, are the Gemüsekebabs.

Bruno Otranto did his doctorate in “Dance-floor psychology”. He perfectly combines sensitivity without reaching the “cheesy sound” with a depth, which goes deeper whenever you enter his sound zone. Just as he was a mother that tells you a story to sweet dreams, Otranto converts his set into a fledged story, in which progression and musical coherence are mixed in equal doses for the audience to enjoy.

Samu began his career 12 years ago as a DJ influenced by the most advanced sounds in electronic music. Techno constitutes a fundamental piece of his initial works, with his sets characterised by the fundamentals of fury and force. Series WKFUL05 belongs to Samu.

The live sessions in various clubs and festivals are diverse and profiled by his style. Yet his Berlin period, the capital of electronic music, was decisive in forming him as a true professional.

marcos_in_dub_wakefulAfter a spectacular start of the new season with a big performance of our guest DJ’s  “Thanksmate” (London/UK), Wakeful is now coming back with more strength  than ever during the coldest month of the year to present a unique artist who surprises everyone with his special originality and creativity.

Marcos in Dub (Madrid/Spain) has become one of the most interesting DJ’s of the national and international electronic scene. House & Techno came into his life from the beginning which really is the key to his style. Technical and qualitative music without losing focus on the dance floor.

Thanks to his residence in “Goa”, monthly party at Fabrik (Madrid), In Dub is one of the most popular and influential artists of the Iberian scene.

Marcos is not a stranger to the Berlin scene either since he, during the last year, played in clubs like Panorama Bar, Stattbad and Ritter Buzke where he left a very good impression among the audience. Joining him as usual is the resident DJ’s Bruno Otranto & FreedomB that will bring you the “homemade” touch for this unique night where only you decide how it will end!

See you on the dance floor Wakefulers!!

Line-up:

Marcos In Dub (Highgrade Records / Goa / Monofunk)

FreedomB (Monza Ibiza Records / Wakeful)

Bruno Otranto (Pantomime Records / Wakeful)
